India side — what applies to you

  • You're an NRI for India if you spend fewer than 182 days in India in the tax year (April–March) — with a few extra tests for visitors and people with Indian income above ₹15 lakh.
  • NRE / FCNR interest is tax-free in India while you are an NRI. NRO interest is taxable, and banks deduct TDS of about 31.2% on it.
  • Rent from your Indian property is taxable in India; your tenant should deduct about 31.2% TDS. You get a 30% standard deduction on rent.
  • NRIs get the ₹4 lakh basic exemption under the new regime, but not the Section 87A rebate that makes income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free for residents.
  • Because TDS is often much higher than the real tax, many NRIs are owed a refund — but only if they file an Indian return.
  • Selling property: without a lower-TDS certificate, buyers in practice deduct TDS on the full sale price. A lower-TDS certificate before the sale, or an ITR after it, gets back what is excess.

Singapore side — points to know

  • Singapore taxes income earned in or received from Singapore; foreign-sourced income received by individuals is generally not taxed, so Indian income is mostly an India-side question.
  • Indian rent, NRO interest and capital gains stay taxable in India; TDS is often higher than the real tax, and only an Indian return recovers the excess.
  • A Certificate of Residence from IRAS supports treaty benefits under the India–Singapore treaty; in India it is used with Form 41 (earlier Form 10F).
  • Your residential status for India depends on days spent in India, not on your Singapore visa type.

Frequently asked questions

Do I pay tax in Singapore on my Indian income?

Foreign-sourced income received in Singapore by an individual is generally exempt, so the Indian tax is usually the tax on it. Confirm your own case with a Singapore adviser.

How do I get a tax residency certificate from Singapore?

IRAS issues a Certificate of Residence on application. Together with Form 41 it lets you claim treaty rates on certain Indian income; we tell you when you need it.

I am a Singapore PR who visits India often. Which return do I file?

That depends on your days in India. Under 182 days (with the extra tests for frequent visitors) you are usually an NRI and file the NRI return; we run the day-count and RNOR tests for you.

Can I pay in Singapore dollars?

Plans are charged in US dollars by international card or PayPal, and your card issuer converts from Singapore dollars at its own rate. Bank transfer is also accepted.

Do I declare Indian rent in Singapore?

Foreign-sourced income received by individuals in Singapore is generally exempt, so usually no tax is due there, but India still taxes the rent. Confirm reporting rules with IRAS or a Singapore adviser.
