India side — what applies to you

  • You're an NRI for India if you spend fewer than 182 days in India in the tax year (April–March) — with a few extra tests for visitors and people with Indian income above ₹15 lakh.
  • NRE / FCNR interest is tax-free in India while you are an NRI. NRO interest is taxable, and banks deduct TDS of about 31.2% on it.
  • Rent from your Indian property is taxable in India; your tenant should deduct about 31.2% TDS. You get a 30% standard deduction on rent.
  • NRIs get the ₹4 lakh basic exemption under the new regime, but not the Section 87A rebate that makes income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free for residents.
  • Because TDS is often much higher than the real tax, many NRIs are owed a refund — but only if they file an Indian return.
  • Selling property: without a lower-TDS certificate, buyers in practice deduct TDS on the full sale price. A lower-TDS certificate before the sale, or an ITR after it, gets back what is excess.

Saudi Arabia side — points to know

  • Saudi Arabia does not charge personal income tax on an individual's salary, so Indian tax is usually the only income tax on your India income.
  • Salary you earn and keep in Saudi Arabia is not taxed in India while you are an NRI; only India-source income (NRO interest, rent, capital gains) is.
  • The deemed-resident rule can apply to Indian citizens with Indian income above ₹15 lakh who are not taxable in any other country — check it before assuming NRI status.
  • Money moved from India to Saudi Arabia from an NRO account or a property sale needs Form 145 (and Form 146 where required) with the bank.

Frequently asked questions

Do I pay tax in Saudi Arabia on my Indian rent or interest?

Saudi Arabia does not tax an individual's salary, and foreign income of expatriate individuals is generally outside personal income tax. Confirm your own case with a local adviser; for India, the income is taxed here and TDS is often higher than the real tax.

Which Saudi documents do I send?

Your passport and your Iqama (residence permit) showing where you live. The rest comes from India: bank statements, rent records and Form 26AS. Saudi tax papers are not needed for an Indian return.

Can I pay in riyals?

Plans are charged in US dollars. The riyal is pegged to the dollar, so the converted amount is stable; pay by international card, PayPal or bank transfer.

Is my end-of-service benefit taxable in India?

For an NRI it is earned and received outside India, so it is generally outside Indian tax. Tell us before you move back to India, because your residential status in the return year then needs checking.

I plan to return to India. What should I check first?

Your residential status for the return year. You may be 'not ordinarily resident' for a few years, during which income earned outside India generally stays outside Indian tax. We run the day-count tests and plan the move with you.
