India side — what applies to you

  • You're an NRI for India if you spend fewer than 182 days in India in the tax year (April–March) — with a few extra tests for visitors and people with Indian income above ₹15 lakh.
  • NRE / FCNR interest is tax-free in India while you are an NRI. NRO interest is taxable, and banks deduct TDS of about 31.2% on it.
  • Rent from your Indian property is taxable in India; your tenant should deduct about 31.2% TDS. You get a 30% standard deduction on rent.
  • NRIs get the ₹4 lakh basic exemption under the new regime, but not the Section 87A rebate that makes income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free for residents.
  • Because TDS is often much higher than the real tax, many NRIs are owed a refund — but only if they file an Indian return.
  • Selling property: without a lower-TDS certificate, buyers in practice deduct TDS on the full sale price. A lower-TDS certificate before the sale, or an ITR after it, gets back what is excess.

Australia side — points for your Australian tax agent

  • Australian tax residents report worldwide income; the Australian year runs from 1 July to 30 June, while India's is April–March.
  • Indian tax paid can generally be claimed as a foreign income tax offset in your Australian return.
  • Foreign income, including Indian rent and bank interest, goes in the foreign income section of your Australian return.
  • Temporary residents are generally not taxed in Australia on most foreign income, so the Indian tax may be the only tax on it — confirm your residency type with your tax agent.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to declare my Indian income in Australia?

If you are an Australian tax resident, yes — worldwide income is reported. Temporary residents are generally taxed differently on foreign income. Your Australian tax agent decides this; we prepare the Indian side and the figures.

How do I claim Indian tax in my Australian return?

Through the foreign income tax offset. You need the Indian tax paid and TDS details, which come from the Indian return and Form 26AS — we provide them.

My Australian year ends 30 June. Do I file in India on a different date?

Yes. India's year is April–March and its due date is usually 31 July after the year ends, so the two returns run on separate calendars. We track the Indian one for you.

Can I pay in Australian dollars?

Plans are charged in US dollars by international card or PayPal, and your card issuer converts from Australian dollars at its own rate. Bank transfer is also accepted.

Do I declare NRO interest in Australia if tax was already deducted in India?

If you are an Australian tax resident, yes: declare the interest and claim the Indian tax as a foreign income tax offset. We give your tax agent the interest and TDS figures from the Indian side.
