Frequently asked questions
What is the personal allowance for 2026/27?
£12,570, the same as in recent years — the threshold is frozen. It is reduced by £1 for every £2 of adjusted net income above £100,000, so it disappears completely at £125,140.
What are the UK income tax bands for 2026/27?
In England, Wales and Northern Ireland: 20% on the first £37,700 above the personal allowance, 40% up to £125,140 and 45% above. Scotland has six bands, from 19% to 48%.
How much National Insurance will I pay?
Employees pay 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270 a year, and 2% on everything above £50,270.
Why is my tax so high between £100,000 and £125,140?
Because the personal allowance is withdrawn in that range, every extra £1 earned costs about 60p in tax and NI (about 67.5p in Scotland). Pension contributions can bring income back below £100,000.
I'm from India and working in the UK — do I pay tax in India too?
Your UK salary isn't taxed in India if you are a non-resident there. But income from India — rent, NRO interest, a property sale — is taxed in India, and the India-UK tax treaty lets you claim credit. Our free NRI tax check shows where you stand.
