Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a percentage of a number?

Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. For example, 20% of 500 = (20 ÷ 100) × 500 = 100. This calculator does that instantly — just enter the percentage and the base number.

How do I find what percentage one number is of another?

Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. For example, 50 out of 200 = (50 ÷ 200) × 100 = 25%. Use the "X is what % of Y" mode above for this.

How is percentage increase or decrease calculated?

Percentage change = ((New Value − Old Value) ÷ Old Value) × 100. A positive result is an increase, a negative result is a decrease. This is the same formula used for tracking price changes, salary hikes, or year-on-year growth.

Can this calculator handle negative numbers?

Yes — enter negative values directly and the calculator will compute the result correctly, though percentage-of-a-negative-base results should be interpreted carefully depending on context.

Is this calculator free to use?

Yes, completely free with no sign-up or limits. It works for any currency or unit since percentages are unit-independent.
