Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) — Complete Guide

👤 Rajput Lalit & Associates📅 17 September 2026⏱️ 6 min read

Almost every registration or filing we've covered elsewhere on this blog — company incorporation, LLP registration, trademark filing, ROC annual returns — eventually asks for a Digital Signature Certificate. It's easy to leave getting one until the last moment, which then holds up the entire filing.

Quick Summary

  • Class 3 DSC is the standard type required for almost all government e-filings today
  • Cost typically ₹1,000-₹2,500 for 1-2 year validity, issued via video verification or Aadhaar eKYC
  • Required for directors/partners for MCA filings, and often for GST registration and trademark e-filing

What a DSC Actually Is

A DSC is the digital equivalent of a physical signature — a small file (usually stored on a USB token) that cryptographically proves a document was signed by a specific, verified individual, and hasn't been altered since. Government portals require it instead of a scanned signature because it's tamper-evident and legally recognised under the Information Technology Act, 2000.

Where a DSC Is Required

  • MCA/ROC filings — company incorporation (SPICe+), annual returns (AOC-4, MGT-7), LLP filings (Form 8, Form 11)
  • Income tax e-verification and filing for audit cases, companies, and LLPs (mandatory, not just an alternative to Aadhaar OTP)
  • GST registration and certain GST filings, particularly for companies and LLPs
  • Trademark and patent e-filing with the IP India portal
  • E-tender submissions on government procurement portals (GeM, CPPP, and state e-procurement sites)

Class 3 DSC — The Standard You Need Today

Earlier classifications (Class 1 and Class 2) have largely been phased out for business use — Class 3 is now the standard requirement across MCA, income tax, GST, and e-tendering platforms, since it involves the most rigorous identity verification.

How to Get One

  • Apply through a licensed Certifying Authority (e.g., eMudhra, Sify, Capricorn, NSDL/Protean)
  • Identity verification via video call or Aadhaar-based eKYC — physical paperwork submission is largely obsolete now
  • DSC is issued on a USB token (a small hardware device) — it cannot simply be emailed or downloaded as a plain file for signing purposes
  • Cost typically ₹1,000-₹2,500 depending on validity period (1 or 2 years) and the issuing authority

Don't Wait Until Filing Day

Verification Can Take a Day or Two

Even with video/Aadhaar verification, issuance isn't always instant — occasional delays happen due to document mismatches or verification queue times. If you're incorporating a company or filing an ROC annual return against a fixed deadline, get the DSC sorted at least a few days ahead rather than assuming same-day issuance.

A DSC is a one-time setup that then supports every subsequent filing — company registration, ROC compliance, GST, and trademark work all draw on the same certificate. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the same DSC for multiple companies I'm a director of?

Yes — a DSC is issued to an individual, not to a specific company, so the same DSC can be used for filings across every company or LLP where that person is a director/partner/designated partner.

How long is a DSC valid?

Typically 1 or 2 years, chosen at the time of application — after expiry, it needs to be renewed (effectively re-issued) through the same verification process.

Do I need a DSC as a sole proprietor?

Not always mandatory for a small proprietorship's day-to-day GST filing (many proprietors use Aadhaar-based e-signature/EVC instead), but it becomes necessary for specific filings like trademark e-filing or certain higher-value transactions.

What's the difference between a DSC and an e-sign (Aadhaar OTP-based)?

Aadhaar-based e-sign/EVC is a simpler, OTP-based alternative accepted for some filings (like most individual income tax returns), while a DSC is a more rigorously verified, hardware-token-based signature required for companies, LLPs, and audit cases where a higher assurance level is mandated.

Can I get a DSC in one day if I need to incorporate a company urgently?

Often yes with video-based verification, but it's not guaranteed — build in at least 2-3 days of buffer before an incorporation deadline rather than assuming same-day turnaround.

DSC issuance rules are governed by the Information Technology Act, 2000 and Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA) guidelines. This article reflects the general process as of September 2026 — please confirm current fees and process with a licensed Certifying Authority.
